In RDB’s original case study, the application was described as “a bit of a black box”. In this context, that means the application and its dependencies could not simply be changed or recompiled for a new operating environment without careful assessment.
Modernisation starts by understanding the service it provides and the dependencies around it. Rehosting, emulation, containment or staged replacement may be safer than an immediate rewrite.
