Complex legacy systems should not force a false choice between accepting platform risk and starting a disruptive replacement programme. The SA Stud Book project shows how discovery, database separation, emulation, virtualisation, and controlled transition can create a supportable technical foundation while preserving the specialist service that still creates value.
